Sentinel InsightsUnlinked brand mentions:what they are and what to do with them.
Unlinked brand mentions shape how search engines and AI assistants see you. Learn how to find them, when to ask for a link and how to earn more of them.

Unlinked brand mentions are references to your brand, product or team on other websites that don’t include a hyperlink back to you. A trade publication names your company in a market roundup. A customer praises your product on Reddit. A podcast host mentions your founder in the show notes. Each one says something about you in public, even though none of them sends a visitor your way.
For years, SEO advice treated these mentions as missed backlinks and nothing more: find them, email the author, ask for a link. That’s still worth doing in the right cases. But mentions now carry weight in their own right, because AI assistants and search features build their picture of a brand from what the web says about it, linked or not. This guide covers what counts, why unlinked mentions matter, how to find them and when a link request is worth sending.
What counts as an unlinked brand mention
Any text that clearly refers to your brand counts. The common forms are:
- Company or product names in articles, reviews, roundups and comparison pages.
- Your founder or spokespeople quoted or named in news stories and features.
- Community discussion on forums, Reddit, Quora and publicly indexed industry groups.
- Podcast and video show notes and transcripts that name you.
- Directory and list pages that include your name with no link.
- Misspellings and old names, which are easy to miss and still refer to you.
Context matters as much as the mention itself. A neutral mention in a respected trade title is worth more than ten passing mentions on thin, low-quality sites. When you review mentions, note who wrote each one, who reads that site and what the mention actually says.
Why unlinked brand mentions matter now
Backlinks remain a search signal, yet they’re no longer the whole story. Search engines and AI assistants try to understand entities: which company is which, what it does and what people say about it. Mentions feed that understanding whether or not anyone clicks.
The clearest public evidence comes from Ahrefs. In a study of 75,000 brands published in May 2025, Ahrefs found that branded web mentions had a 0.664 correlation with brand visibility in Google’s AI Overviews, compared with 0.218 for backlinks. Correlation doesn’t prove cause, yet it points the same way as what shows up in AI answers: brands that get talked about in credible places get named.
Mentions also shape reputation directly. A prospect who searches your name and finds a fair review, a quote in a trade article and an active community thread gets a very different impression from one who finds nothing at all. Every mention is a small piece of evidence that you’re real, active and taken seriously.
How to find unlinked brand mentions
You don’t need an expensive platform to start. A simple monthly routine covers most brands:
- Search operators. Search Google for your brand name in quotes and exclude your own site with -site:yourdomain.com. Repeat for product names and your founder’s name.
- Google Alerts. Set free alerts for each name, so new mentions arrive by email.
- Monitoring tools. Several SEO and media monitoring tools can flag new pages that name you without a link. Pick one and check it on a fixed day each week.
- Social and community search. Search Reddit, LinkedIn and X directly, since many tools miss them.
- AI assistants. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot about your category and note which sources they cite when they name you or your competitors.
- One log. Record each mention with the URL, date, tone, the site’s audience and whether a link exists.
We keep one live coverage log for every client, with each item labelled earned, placed or paid. Mentions found this way go into the same log, so the whole picture of what’s being said about the brand sits in one place.
When to ask for a link, and how
Not every unlinked mention deserves an email. Ask when the link would help a reader, for example when an article names your tool or your research and a reader would naturally want to check it. Leave it alone when the mention is passing, the site is low quality, or the publication clearly doesn’t link out.
Here’s a hypothetical example. A trade newsletter publishes a roundup of payroll tools and names yours in a sentence about pricing, with no link. A two-line email pointing the editor to your public pricing page gives their readers a source to check and gives you a link that makes sense. The same newsletter naming you in a list of forty conference sponsors isn’t worth the ask.
When you do ask, keep it short and useful:
- Thank the writer for the mention and name the article.
- Give the exact page that fits, such as the product page or the original study, rather than your homepage.
- Explain in one sentence why the link helps their reader.
- Offer something useful in return where it’s honest, such as an updated figure or a quote for a future piece.
- Send one follow-up at most, then let it go.
Never offer payment for a link inside editorial content. If a link is paid for, it should carry a paid label, the same rule we follow for every sponsored placement we arrange.
How to earn more brand mentions
Finding mentions is useful. Earning more of the right ones is where the value sits. The reliable routes all give writers a reason to name you:
- Original data. A survey or analysis that journalists can cite in their own stories.
- Expert commentary. A founder or senior team member who answers journalist requests quickly and says something specific.
- Podcast appearances. Guest spots, which our strategic outreach team books, produce show notes, transcripts and clips that name you.
- Community presence. Helpful, disclosed participation in the forums your buyers already use.
- Consistent facts. The same company description, founder bio and product names everywhere, so mentions are easy to attribute to you.
That’s the core of Digital PR work: stories and experts that earn coverage in places your buyers and AI assistants already trust. For brands that want to be named in AI answers specifically, our AI Search Visibility service maps which sources the assistants cite in your category. Our guide to earned media covers the wider picture.
How to measure unlinked brand mentions
Count mentions, then look past the count. A useful monthly view tracks:
- New mentions, split into linked and unlinked.
- The share of mentions on sites your buyers actually read.
- Tone: positive, neutral or negative.
- Share of voice against two or three named competitors.
- How often AI assistants name you for your category’s main questions.
Unlinked mentions aren’t always friendly. A complaint thread or a critical review is still a mention, and it still shapes what people and AI assistants learn about you. Reply where the platform allows it, fix the underlying problem where you can, and track whether the tone shifts over the following months.
Watch the trend across quarters rather than weeks. Mentions build slowly, and one strong story can shift the picture more than a month of small ones. If the count rises while the quality of sites falls, that’s a warning sign worth acting on.
If you want more of the right people talking about your brand, our Brand Building service plans the stories, experts and placements that earn mentions in places that count.
Questions readers ask
Are unlinked brand mentions good for SEO?
They can help. Search engines and AI assistants build their understanding of a brand from what the web says about it, and an Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands found mentions correlated more strongly with AI Overview visibility than backlinks did.
Should I ask every site to add a link?
No. Ask only where a link helps the reader and the site is relevant and credible. Passing mentions and low-quality sites aren't worth the email.
How do I track unlinked brand mentions for free?
Set Google Alerts for each brand and founder name, run quoted Google searches that exclude your own site, and search Reddit and LinkedIn directly. Log everything in one sheet.
Do unlinked mentions help with AI search visibility?
They can. AI assistants draw on what credible sources say about a brand, and many of those sources mention brands without linking to them.
